Two Bad Bills, and they have F. Jim's name on them

It's been a while since we've updated here at the all-things-anti-Sensenbrenner ranch. So we're going to hit two balls with one bat:

By now you have probably heard of the REAL ID bill. This is F. Jim's pet project, leftover from last fall's inter-Republican fights. UNREAL ID has all the skinny you need. Essentially, the REAL ID is designed to be a national ID card. It adds countless layers of bureaucracy to the process of getting identification. (This is a big deal, considering how many states--including Wisconsin--are making moves toward requiring state ID to vote!) This is Big Brother come to life and from Brookfield.

The second bill is another of F. Jim's projects, the bill that, among other things, "provides for a two year jail sentence if you observe or come across information about drug distribution near colleges and do not report it to authorities within 24 hours and provide full assistance investigating, apprehending, and prosecuting those involved." That's right: Don't Snitch, Go To Jail. The Drug Policy Alliance has more.

As a recent hurricane Katrina evacuee (house in a no flood zone took 9 feet of water - cut out through the roof in Bay St. Louis, MS.) I feel VERY sorry for the people of Wisconsin. We were FORCED into bankruptcy this week because of Mr. Sensenbrenner's refusal to allow those devastated by Hurricane Katrina to "buy" some time to evaluate our financial positions. Insurance didn't pay, house is uninhabitable, federal aid is remote at best. Do we pay for 5 years on a dwelling worth MAYBE 25% of its mortgaged value? What is more important to the people of Wisconsin is that the rest of the nation views your representative as arrogant and out of touch demagogue. Let me be clear, I have ALWAYS voted Republican, so for me, this is not a partisan issue. This will be a LONG, cold winter in Wisconsin. When the people of Wisconsin are choosing to pay their mortgage or heat their home, and bankruptcy looms in the springtime because, the bills will come due (TRUST ME). I'm afraid the remainder of the nation will have little sympathy for Mr. Sensenbrenner's district and their position, just as he had little sympathy for those of us who had our backs against the wall, and he chose to take the political knife and gut us. Think of him this winter, as the price of Katrina mounts!
